A vibrant tribute is underway in Brampton as a beloved park gears up for a special renaming ceremony. Following a unanimous decision by the city council last August, Eastbourne Park is being transformed into Kalair Family Park on Oct. 16.
The park’s new name pays homage to the enduring contributions of the Kalair family, particularly Muhammed Nawaz Kalair and Muhammed Aslam Kalair. These two brothers played pivotal roles in nurturing Brampton’s thriving Muslim community, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to influence the city’s cultural landscape.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his delight in commemorating the remarkable achievements of the Kalair brothers through this renaming initiative. He emphasized that the park’s new identity serves as a symbol of gratitude and respect for their significant impact on the community.
Moreover, the renaming coincides with the city’s celebration of Islamic History Month, a time to honor the rich heritage, customs, and individuals who have profoundly shaped Brampton over the years.
An integral part of Brampton’s history, Muhammed Nawaz Kalair and Muhammed Aslam Kalair were instrumental in establishing the city’s first mosque in 1977, as well as an elementary Islamic school that quickly garnered 300 students.
