Unions Gear Up for Strategic Battle Against Canada’s Labour Reform Bill C-39

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is ready to take decisive action, including legal steps, to contest federal Bill C-39 if it becomes law.

Bill C-39 contains clauses aimed at streamlining major national projects and influencing labor relations, specifically granting the minister power to intervene in labor disputes at federally regulated companies under specific circumstances.

CUPE, a prominent union with a nationwide presence and ties to FTQ in Quebec, voiced opposition to the bill during a rally in Montreal, joined by environmental organizations like Équiterre and representatives from various unions such as the Steelworkers, the Teamsters, and local FTQ-Construction chapters.

CUPE represents a diverse range of workers, including dockworkers, airline industry employees, and telecommunications sector workers like Air Canada flight attendants and Montreal dockworkers, who have been impacted by previous ministerial interventions.

During an interview, CUPE-Québec President Patrick Gloutney emphasized their readiness to challenge the law, stating they will utilize all available means, including legal recourse.
