Ontario Police Warn Drivers of Wrong-Way Incidents Near Gordie Howe Bridge

Authorities in Ontario are cautioning motorists to be mindful of road signs near the Gordie Howe International Bridge in Windsor following multiple instances of vehicles traveling in the wrong direction along Highway 401.

Since the opening of the bridge in July, there have been a total of 64 reported incidents involving drivers going the wrong way on the highway, prompting concerns for public safety.

In response to these occurrences, law enforcement officials advise drivers who miss the exit prior to the bridge not to take drastic actions such as making U-turns or reversing on the highway. Instead, they recommend proceeding towards the toll booths, where staff can provide assistance by guiding vehicles to a gate for an alternative route that bypasses border customs.

For those who wish to avoid entering the United States, authorities suggest using the Ojibway Parkway exit or Exit 1 along the highway.

Drivers are being reminded that the repercussions of driving in the wrong direction include facing a fine of $110 or, in worst-case scenarios, being involved in a potentially fatal collision.
