Montreal Gears up for Winter with $15.8M Snow Removal Equipment Investment

The City of Montreal is getting ready for winter with a comprehensive plan that includes a significant investment of $15.8 million in snow removal equipment. This initiative also involves the establishment of a new weather monitoring unit and the launch of a user-friendly app for residents to stay updated on street clearing efforts.

A substantial portion of the budget, around $13.3 million, will be allocated towards acquiring essential equipment like loader tractors, snowblower heads, and salt spreader trucks. Additionally, $2.5 million will be distributed to the boroughs to support their salting operations.

In an effort to enhance response capabilities, a new team of weather experts will closely monitor weather patterns and coordinate the city’s actions accordingly. The city administration is also ramping up its pothole repair unit by doubling the number of teams to 18, focusing on addressing issues on major streets.

Following concerns raised last spring about the condition of Montreal’s pothole repair machinery, the city is currently in the process of procuring new pothole-filling machines through a bidding process.

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada highlighted the administration’s commitment to improving services, emphasizing that over 200,000 potholes have been filled since taking office. Acknowledging the public’s expectations, she expressed the city’s dedication to creating a more efficient and responsive urban environment.

Embracing technology, Montreal will introduce the Go-Géo app, allowing residents to track snow removal and sidewalk de-icing progress. The city is also exploring innovative data and software solutions to streamline work order management and equipment tracking for enhanced operational efficiency.
