A Toronto hospital has terminated an employee who engaged in racist behavior while on public transit, as captured in a viral video.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre confirmed that the individual is no longer part of the hospital staff following an internal inquiry prompted by the circulating footage on social media.
Recognizing the distress caused, especially to its Black staff, patients, and supporters, Canada’s largest trauma center expressed its regret over the incident.
Sunnybrook emphasized that the actions of the former employee do not align with the hospital’s values and ethos.
While the specific video sparking the investigation was not disclosed, a widely shared clip filmed on a Toronto subway depicted a person in a Sunnybrook sweater using derogatory language towards Black individuals, leading to a confrontation by fellow commuters. The video ends with the individual, who identifies as a Sunnybrook staff member, seemingly knocking the recording device from the hands of a passenger.
