Doug McCallum Triumphs in Surrey Mayoral Race, Edges Out Brenda Locke in Stunning Victory

Surrey Elects Doug McCallum as Mayor Once Again

In a decisive victory, Doug McCallum has reclaimed the mayor’s seat in Surrey, defeating incumbent Brenda Locke. McCallum, representing the Safe Surrey Coalition, secured a significant lead of approximately 10,000 votes with most polling places reporting.

Expressing his dedication to the city, McCallum stated in his victory speech, “I love Surrey, but I even love the people of Surrey more. Together, we’re going to build a great city that our families will thrive in, with ample job opportunities, sports facilities, and a strong sense of community that will position us as one of the best global cities.”

McCallum appointed Mandeep Singh Nagra as his deputy mayor, emphasizing a new era of leadership in Surrey. Locke graciously conceded, acknowledging the voice of the voters and reflecting on her term as mayor, which commenced in 2022 following her campaign to retain the RCMP in Surrey.

This election marked a significant shift in leadership after a tumultuous period characterized by debates over policing, concerns about public safety, and managing Surrey’s rapid urban expansion. The priorities of the campaign centered on public safety, affordability, property taxes, and infrastructure development, with the policing issue remaining a prominent focus.

As the incoming council prepares to address the city’s evolving needs and challenges, questions loom regarding funding for proposed infrastructure projects and services to accommodate Surrey’s continued growth while addressing the community’s concerns about affordability and safety.
