A group of demonstrators gathered in downtown Montreal, coming together to condemn police violence amidst recent allegations involving Montreal Police officers. The protest, held at Phillips Square near Rue Sainte-Catherine, not only showed support for student protesters in France but also highlighted the issue of police violence and mistreatment of vulnerable individuals in Montreal. The demonstration followed the suspension of two officers by the SPVM due to allegations of misconduct, including a disturbing incident of one officer reportedly urinating on a homeless person.
Frédéric Audet, a spokesperson for a student association at Université de Montréal, passionately spoke out against police violence targeting student protesters in both France and Quebec. Indigenous activist Émilie Fleming-Dubé also joined in, emphasizing the need to address police violence against marginalized communities and draw attention to the plight of homelessness.
In a related event, massive protests erupted in France over the weekend, with hundreds of thousands taking to the streets to protest the high cost of living and deteriorating school conditions. The demonstrations resulted in clashes between police and protesters, leading to approximately 400 arrests.
