CAQ in Search of New Leader Following Stunning Election Upset

The CAQ, a political party in Quebec, is undergoing a significant transformation in the wake of their recent electoral loss. A crucial decision looms as the party prepares to select a new leader to navigate through this challenging period.

Behind closed doors on Saturday, the party’s executive council will convene to appoint an interim leader following the resignation of Christine Fréchette. An official announcement regarding this leadership change is anticipated in the near future.

The electoral setback represents a stunning turn of events for the CAQ, which commanded a 90-seat majority just four years ago. However, in the most recent election, the party only captured 13% of the vote and failed to secure any constituencies.

With Fréchette stepping down, the CAQ now faces uncertainty concerning its future leadership, political trajectory, and strategies for regaining support throughout Quebec.

Reflecting on her time in office, Fréchette expressed, “I depart with a sense of having served Quebec to the best of my capabilities,” during the statement made at the National Assembly. Notably, Fréchette not only lost her position as premier but also her own electoral district of Trois-Rivières.
