Bonnie Crombie, candidate for mayor in Mississauga, is making a bold promise to prioritize extending the TTC’s Line 2 subway into the city’s western region. This initiative aims to create a direct link between Toronto’s subway system and Mississauga’s core.
Crombie’s proposal involves collaborating with the province, Metrolinx, the City of Toronto, and the TTC to craft a joint business case for extending Line 2 westward from Kipling Station, passing through Sherway Gardens, and reaching the heart of Mississauga.
The plan, though lacking a specific timeline or cost estimate, focuses on advancing the necessary planning to assess the project’s feasibility and potential delivery methods. If elected, Crombie plans to kick off discussions with government and transit partners in her first 100 days in office, seeking federal involvement in the planning phase.
Furthermore, she commits to presenting a motion to the council within the same timeframe to officially initiate Mississauga’s role in a business case study and secure funding for the city’s portion of the planning process. The study will explore various routes, station locations including Sherway Gardens and Mississauga City Centre, connections to existing transit systems, ridership projections, environmental impacts, and integration with the existing Line 2 network.
Crombie aims to start the jointly funded study within her first year as mayor, with the objective of completing the initial business case within two years. An important aspect of the proposal is the consideration of elevated sections along the route in addition to underground tunneling, with a thorough evaluation of construction methods and their associated benefits and challenges.
The mayoral candidate emphasizes the need for a solid funding and delivery agreement to determine project leadership, cost-sharing mechanisms, and ownership and maintenance responsibilities. Alongside her focus on the subway extension, Crombie is committed to advocating for other transit enhancements, such as improved bus services, the completion of the Hazel McCallion Line, and enhanced GO Transit services.
To ensure transparency, the plan includes regular public updates on the project’s progress, expenditure reports, funding commitments, and key decisions as the planning process unfolds.
