Ontario to Offer Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids for Mild Hearing Loss

Ontario is set to introduce a new initiative that will make over-the-counter hearing aids accessible to residents with mild hearing loss. This development, included in the upcoming fall economic update, aims to provide individuals in the province with greater options and convenience when seeking hearing assistance.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones emphasizes that this change will empower Ontarians to access the necessary support for their hearing needs promptly and conveniently. While Health Canada has already granted medical device licenses for wireless earbuds with embedded hearing aid features, current Ontario regulations restrict the sale of hearing aids without a prescription from a medical professional.

With forthcoming legislative adjustments and regulatory updates, manufacturers of in-ear headphones and earbuds equipped with hearing aid capabilities will be permitted to activate these functions for retail in Ontario. Importantly, this new measure is designed to complement existing hearing aid prescriptions and coverage, rather than replace them.
