A 72-year-old man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon following an alleged assault on a metro platform, as reported by Montreal police (SPVM).
The incident took place around 1:30 p.m. at Pie-IX metro station in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough, where police responded to multiple 911 calls about a disturbance on the platform. According to Manuel Couture, spokesperson for SPVM, the altercation initially started on a metro train and escalated onto the platform.
During the altercation, the victim was repeatedly attacked in the upper body by the suspect, who fled before law enforcement arrived on the scene. The victim sustained severe injuries and was swiftly transported to the hospital, with authorities expressing concerns for his life as the day progressed.
The alleged suspect remains at large, with the crime scene under investigation. Couture mentioned that officials are setting up the scene for further examination. Investigators are planning to interview witnesses and analyze video footage to uncover more details about the conflict’s origins and to identify and apprehend the suspect.
The Pie-IX metro station temporarily halted train services from approximately 1:55 p.m. to 3 p.m. to facilitate police inquiries.
