A Montreal teenager’s eagerly anticipated Girl Guides trip to the U.K. turned into a heartbreaking disappointment after a series of flight disruptions by Air Canada left her group stranded, unable to embark on their adventure.
Fifteen-year-old Mikaela Hosein Patel, a dedicated third-year Pathfinder representing Quebec, had been diligently preparing for two years to join 15 other Girl Guides and leaders on a thrilling 10-day journey through London and Edinburgh.
Expressing her deep disappointment, Mikaela shared, “I was saddened and frustrated after putting in so much effort and time into fundraising, only to have it all seemingly go to waste.” The group had exciting plans lined up, including visits to the British Museum, exploration of London, nights at the Girl Guide house Pax Lodge, and adventures in Edinburgh’s Highlands and the Kelpies.
Mikaela’s meticulously laid-out plans were derailed when their initial flight from Montreal to Toronto was canceled, forcing her to drive to Toronto with her father and uncle. However, further setbacks awaited them as their international flight to London was also canceled, leaving the group in disarray despite efforts to secure alternate travel arrangements.
The financial toll of the canceled trip was significant, amounting to $5,500, primarily funded through two years of dedicated cookie sales and homemade treats sold at various events. While Air Canada is expected to refund $1,500 for the airfare, doubts loom over the reimbursement of the remaining $4,000 allocated for accommodations, meals, and activities.
The journey held special significance for Mikaela, who had recently achieved the Duke of Edinburgh Award – Bronze Level and was eagerly looking forward to exploring Scotland as part of the trip. Having been a part of Girl Guides since the age of five, the trip was meant to be a crowning achievement of her decade-long journey with the organization.
Despite the setback, Mikaela remains resilient, focusing on the future. Girl Guides of Canada is actively working with their travel agency to address the financial losses, while Mikaela’s family explores alternative travel options for the upcoming year.
In the midst of disappointment and uncertainty, Mikaela’s passion for Girl Guides remains unwavering. She reflects on the missed opportunities and the emotional impact of the situation, hopeful for better outcomes in the future while acknowledging the shared struggles of her fellow travelers.
