A former NFL player, Darryl “Buster” Skrine, has been arrested in Georgia on 18 charges linked to an alleged nationwide financial fraud operation, alongside an outstanding warrant in Canada for similar offenses.
Skrine, aged 36, was apprehended by Roswell Police at a residence on Pine Grove Road on Wednesday without any issues during the execution of search and arrest warrants.
Known for his career spanning 11 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and Chicago Bears, Skrine is accused of masterminding an intricate financial fraud scheme that targeted women across the U.S. The investigation, initiated by a victim’s report of financial exploitation by Skrine in July, unveiled his modus operandi.
Allegedly, Skrine utilized online dating platforms to establish relationships with women, spinning tales of financial distress. He purportedly persuaded victims to send money under the guise of repayment through his NFL annuity, diverting the funds towards a luxurious lifestyle encompassing travel, Airbnb rentals, and gift card splurges.
To date, authorities have identified three victims in Wisconsin, North Carolina, and New York, collectively amounting to financial losses nearing $300,000. The investigation continues as law enforcement suspects there might be further victims.
Facing a litany of charges in Georgia, including deposit account fraud, identity fraud, financial transaction card fraud, theft by taking, and attempted theft, Skrine also remains sought after by the Durham Regional Police Service in Canada.
In a previous case concluded in August 2023, an investigation into a $100,000 check fraud involving Skrine led to his arrest at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Released on bail in April 2024 under GPS monitoring, Skrine contravened his release terms by removing the tracking device and absconding after missing his court appearance in May of the same year.
Collaborating with Roswell authorities, Durham Regional Police are working to ensure Skrine is held accountable for all charges. The investigation is ongoing.
