A massive wildfire has forced the closure of the Coquihalla Highway section between Hope and Merritt, with drivers witnessing the flames dangerously close to the roadway.
Videos captured by motorists, including Andrea Chambers, reveal the harrowing experience of driving through thick smoke and flames engulfing the surroundings. Chambers described feeling as if she was entering a dark hole, emphasizing the intensity of the fire’s proximity.
The Mine Creek Fire, which has spread rapidly to nearly five square kilometers near Coquihalla Summit since Monday, has prompted evacuation orders and alerts in the surrounding areas.
Mayor Mike Goetz of Merritt advised residents to prepare for possible evacuations, emphasizing the need for readiness with essentials like a 72-hour emergency kit, fueling vehicles, and organizing important documents.
As the blaze continues to grow, authorities have recommended using Highway 1 or Highway 3 as alternative routes until the Coquihalla Highway reopens.
