Tragic Construction Zone Collision in Maria, Gaspésie Claims a Life; SQ Launches Investigation

A tragic accident occurred late Friday evening in Maria, Gaspésie, when two vehicles collided in a construction zone, resulting in the loss of a young life.

The incident took place at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Perron Boulevard, near Des Engoulevents Street, along the waterfront, prompting emergency responders to rush to the scene.

Preliminary information suggests that a vehicle heading east on Boulevard Perron crashed into another vehicle that was stationary at a red light in the same direction, as detailed by Laurie Avoine, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

The victim, a man in his 20s hailing from the Gesgapegiag Indigenous reserve, tragically passed away due to his injuries at the hospital.

The second driver, a man in his 30s, sustained severe injuries and was also hospitalized, though his condition is stable.

An expert police investigator specialized in collisions was dispatched to the site to unravel the sequence of events leading to the tragedy, Avoine confirmed.

The SQ’s inquiry into the incident is currently underway to establish a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances.
