Bonnie Crombie Steps Down as Ontario Liberal Party Leader
Bonnie Crombie has announced her resignation as the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, marking a significant shift in the political landscape. Initially indicating her intention to continue as leader, Crombie ultimately decided that a leadership race at this time would not serve the party well.
During the Ontario Liberal AGM over the weekend, delegates voted on whether to proceed with a new leadership race. Ultimately, 57% of the delegates voted against it, slightly above the 50% threshold required by the party’s constitution for Crombie to remain in her role. However, some members had urged her to step down if she did not receive at least 66% support.
In a statement released on Sunday, Crombie expressed her belief that it was in the best interest of the party to transition towards a leadership vote despite receiving majority support from the delegates. She will continue in her role until her successor is chosen.
“This decision transcends personal ambitions and egos. It reflects our shared commitment to a common cause,” Crombie emphasized.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford took to social media to express gratitude to Crombie for her years of service as an MP, mayor, and leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, acknowledging the sacrifices inherent in political life.
