The Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) project has reached a significant milestone on its path to completion. Insider sources from the Ford government have confirmed to 680 NewsRadio that the line is gearing up for a crucial 30-day revenue demonstration set to kick off this weekend.
This demonstration period is the final test before the public launch of the LRT, tentatively slated for November. While an exact opening date is yet to be finalized, this trial run is a crucial step in ensuring the system is fully operational and ready to welcome passengers.
During the 30-day demonstration, 15 trains are expected to run at five-minute intervals during peak hours in both the morning and afternoon. The line must operate smoothly for three consecutive weeks before it can be officially opened to the public.
This progress puts the Finch West LRT ahead of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, which is facing delays in starting its revenue demonstration. Recent updates from Metrolinx and transportation officials indicate that the Eglinton line might not open until at least October.
In a separate development, operational control of the 19-kilometre, 25-station Eglinton Crosstown line was transferred to the TTC in June. Challenges related to the aging LRT vehicles have been identified, with concerns about availability and reliability for all-day service.
Construction on the Finch West LRT began in 2018 with an initial target opening of 2021. Once operational, the 18-stop line will connect Finch West station to Humber College, providing a crucial transportation link for residents in north Toronto.
