A man and a woman hailing from Toronto are now facing serious charges following their alleged involvement in a human trafficking scheme. The dramatic turn of events unfolded when a courageous female victim managed to escape their clutches and notify the authorities, putting an end to what investigators believe was a prolonged operation.
Durham Regional Police initiated an investigation in July after suspicions arose regarding a male and a female who were reportedly exploiting the victim. It is alleged that the duo initially made contact with the victim through social media, enticing her with promises of a lavish lifestyle. The victim’s movements were closely monitored, her personal documents confiscated, and she was coerced into meeting a substantial weekly cash quota set by the accused. Throughout the ordeal, she was shuttled between various locations in Ontario.
The case took a significant turn when the woman successfully broke free from the grip of the suspects and alerted the authorities. Subsequently, on September 18, law enforcement officers carried out search warrants at multiple sites, apprehending both suspects without any resistance.
Weyyon Brown, aged 38, from Toronto, is facing an array of charges including trafficking in persons, withholding identity documents, receiving a material benefit, procuring, exerting control, direction or influence, criminal harassment, and forgery. Eve Adam, aged 26, also from Toronto, has been charged with receiving a material benefit, procuring, exerting control, direction or influence, and criminal harassment. Both individuals are currently in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
