Deadly Blaze Engulfs Alma Apartment: One Fatality, Ongoing SQ Investigation

Authorities are currently probing a tragic fire incident that unfolded in Alma, located in the picturesque region of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

The blaze erupted late on Friday night within a six-unit building situated on the corner of Scott Street and Gagnon Street. While most residents were successfully evacuated with the assistance of law enforcement and firefighters, a grim discovery was made after the flames were extinguished – the tragic loss of a life within the premises.

Sergeant Hugues Beaulieu, the official spokesperson for the investigative body Sûreté du Québec, confirmed the distressing news. A formal process led by a coroner has been initiated to officially identify the deceased, who is believed to be an adult.

Investigators from the Sûreté du Québec’s Major Crimes Investigation Division are actively delving into the circumstances surrounding the fire. Despite the ongoing examination, initial findings do not indicate any suspicious activity such as arson.

Sergeant Beaulieu shed light on the current investigative efforts, stating that today, specialists from the Sûreté du Québec will be present at the site to determine the root cause of the fire. At this stage, there are no evident signs of foul play, leading authorities to lean towards categorizing the incident as an unfortunate accident rather than a deliberate act.
