Fatal Accident on QEW: Runaway Wheel Strikes Two Vehicles in St. Catharines, Leaving One Dead

A tragic incident unfolded on the Queen Elizabeth Way in St. Catharines as a loose wheel from a vehicle caused a deadly collision involving two other vehicles, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

The fatal crash, which resulted in one person losing their life, took place on the Toronto-bound lanes close to Niagara Street. The OPP shared details of the accident in a video update, attributing the collision to a wheel detaching from a vehicle in the lanes heading towards Fort Erie. The rogue wheel crossed into the opposite lanes, striking two vehicles.

Sadly, the driver of one of the vehicles involved succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the passenger was transported to a nearby hospital for assessment.

As a result of the incident, the Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW are shut down at Glendale Avenue in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with closures also in effect for the Fort Erie-bound lanes between Niagara Street and Welland Avenue. Motorists are advised to use Niagara Street to access the Toronto-bound QEW.

Authorities anticipate the closures to remain in place for approximately four hours, until approximately 5 p.m. For real-time traffic updates, tune in to 680News Radio.
