BCGEU Strike Intensifies: Liquor Stores Shut Down as Protests Spread

On Wednesday, twenty-five liquor stores in British Columbia shut their doors as part of an escalating strike involving public sector workers. The BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) reported that over 600 workers from key Liquor Distribution Branch stores went on strike.

The union strategically selected these locations due to their significant contribution to government revenue. By protesting at warehouses and retail stores, public service workers aim to highlight their crucial role in funding essential services for British Columbians.

Furthermore, nearly 1,000 employees from various ministries in Victoria have also joined the strike, impacting services related to agriculture, environment, forests, jobs, tourism, and water.

The strike has extended to BC Liquor and Cannabis warehouses and the head office earlier this week, affecting various sectors, including the restaurant industry and small businesses. BCGEU President Paul Finch urged these businesses to support their cause by urging the government to resume negotiations promptly.

With this recent development, approximately 14,000 workers are now involved in the ongoing job action.
