Recent Increase in Distraction Theft Prompts Laval Police Warning
Laval police have issued a warning to the community following a surge in reports of distraction theft. More than 40 individuals have come forward as victims of these incidents between April 1 and August 20.
The thefts primarily involve the stealing of jewelry from unsuspecting individuals, with seniors often being the main targets. According to authorities, the suspects employ various tactics, such as approaching people for directions or offering recommendations for local establishments.
In a common scenario, the suspects engage victims in conversation and then attempt to give them jewelry as a “gift” as a token of gratitude. It is during this exchange that the perpetrators discreetly steal the victim’s genuine jewelry.
Through their investigation, the police have identified that the suspects likely originate from Eastern Europe. The majority of these incidents occur in public spaces like shopping center parking lots.
To combat these crimes, law enforcement is advising the public to remain vigilant and offers the following tips for protection:
– Be cautious of strangers approaching you with unsolicited gifts.
– Avoid engaging in conversations with individuals you do not know in public places.
– Keep valuables, especially jewelry, secure and out of sight in crowded areas.
