“Alarm Bells Ring in Defense Sector as QS Highlights Concerns Over Potential Quebec Subsidies”

Québec Solidaire (QS) strongly opposes the economic approach of the Legault government, which aims to capitalize on the booming demand for defense industry products in Canada and Europe amidst the current global landscape.

Expressing concerns, QS has raised the alarm regarding the government’s plan to provide extensive financial support to the arms industry through Investissement Québec, as highlighted in a recent press release.

Alejandra Zaga-Mendez, the economic spokesperson for QS, emphasized that the use of public funds for the production of weapons is a clear boundary that should not be crossed. She urged transparency and accountability in the decision-making process, stating that Quebec residents deserve clarity on the terms and conditions of such contracts.

In an effort to seek clarity, Zaga-Mendez sent a formal letter on the matter to members of the Committee on the Economy and Labor, aiming to illuminate the details of these proposed investments.

QS is advocating for a public discourse on the utilization of taxpayer money in the defense industry, emphasizing the importance of democratic oversight and accountability.

The party’s press release strongly condemns the idea of international defense companies benefitting from substantial public funds for the manufacturing of weapons without proper democratic scrutiny.
