Community Mourns Tragic Loss: Vigil Held for 4-Year-Old Boy Struck by Bus in Horseshoe Bay

At a touching memorial held at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Vancouver, family and friends gathered to remember four-year-old Leonardo, who tragically lost his life after being struck by a transit bus at Horseshoe Bay. The boy’s mother, Silvana Schramm, who survived the accident but spent months in the hospital, was also honored during the ceremony.

Leonardo’s father, Clineu Machado, fondly recalled his son as a joyful child who always had a smile on his face and a zest for life, especially on sunny days. Despite the immense pain of their loss, the family decided to proceed with the funeral to find closure, supported by the community through a successful GoFundMe campaign that raised nearly $200,000 for funeral expenses and medical bills.

Silvana, still grappling with the emotional aftermath of the tragedy, expressed that while she is slowly recovering physically, a part of her heart will always be missing. She shared that she felt her son’s presence guiding her towards healing, even as they continue to seek answers from the ongoing investigation into the crash.

As the family navigates their grief and seeks justice, they lamented the lack of support from institutions like Translink and ICBC, feeling let down by the systems meant to assist in times of need.
