“Controversial Sign Branding NDP as ‘Communist’ Sparks Outrage Outside Vancouver Mansion During B.C. Election”

Last year, Elections BC found that billionaire Chip Wilson violated third-party election advertising rules by displaying signs in front of his Vancouver mansion. One of the signs claimed the NDP is “Communist.” In a letter to Wilson, Elections BC stated that the three signs he erected during the provincial election period qualified as third-party advertising, necessitating his registration under the Elections Act. Wilson eventually registered on October 10, 2024, after cooperating with the Elections BC investigation. The investigation, initiated in early October 2024, led to Wilson being fined $600 for breaching the Election Act. One sign outside Wilson’s mansion, valued at over $82 million, stated, “Eby will tell you the Conservatives are ‘Far Right’ but neglects saying that the NDP is ‘Communist.’” While two other signs were also placed in front of Wilson’s residence, only one had the required authorization statement as per the election regulations.
