Toronto police apprehended nine individuals during a protest in the heart of the city on Wednesday evening. The incident unfolded near University Avenue and Richmond Street West around 7:45 p.m., with demonstrators intentionally causing a disruption by blocking a significant intersection, causing traffic congestion.
According to law enforcement, when ordered to clear the road, a portion of the protesters declined to cooperate, leading to a standoff. The police mentioned in a press release that all those arrested actively impeded officers from carrying out their duties, resulting in their detention.
The nine individuals were charged with offenses including unlawful assembly, common nuisance, and obstructing law enforcement. The exact motive behind the protest was not disclosed by authorities.
