Quebec orders public inquiry into fatal truck collisions following tragic mother and son deaths on Highway 30.
Quebec’s Chief Coroner, Reno Bernier, has initiated a public inquiry prompted by Minister of Public Security Ian Lafrenière’s request following a series of fatal collisions involving heavy trucks. The tragic deaths of Tanya and Elliot Lalonde on August 27 along Highway 30 in Boucherville will be the focal point of this investigation.
The inquiry aims to delve deep into the circumstances and causes of these fatalities, pinpoint contributing factors, and spark a broader conversation on road safety issues. It will also put forth recommendations to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Coroner Dave Kimpton will lead the inquiry, with assistance from Public Inquiries Prosecutor Émilie Fay Carlos. Bernier emphasized the importance of collective action to enhance road safety, stressing the necessity of addressing the concerning trend of fatal collisions involving heavy trucks.
Apart from investigating the Lalonde case, the Coroner may also examine other recent deaths to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation and formulate effective recommendations.
Further information regarding the inquiry, including hearing schedules, will be disclosed at a later date on the Public Inquiries Calendar section of the Coroner’s Office website.
