Quebec Care Worker Fired After Being Caught Asleep on Duty Loses Appeal

A patient care attendant in Quebec has lost her job after being found sleeping on duty by her employer. The attendant, who worked alone at night in a residence with 22 residents, was dismissed by the private nursing home following complaints of unattended needs during the night. The employer personally visited the residence and discovered the attendant sleeping in the basement during her shift. Despite claiming it was an isolated incident due to dizziness, the attendant was ultimately fired. The Labour Relations Board sided with the nursing home, stating that the seriousness of the misconduct warranted immediate dismissal.
