Editor and publisher John Hughes emphasized the variety of perspectives captured in the book. Contributors range from a doctor to an Indigenous artist, a schoolteacher, and a retired soldier, all sharing their views on why Canada should safeguard its independence.
Despite the underlying fear, there is a strong sense of determination among the contributors to protect Canada’s identity and borders. Hughes highlighted the theme of recognizing both the strengths and imperfections of Canada while acknowledging the ongoing work needed to preserve its values.
The book seeks to inspire readers to stand up for Canadian values and identity, emphasizing that the damage from such proposals cannot be reversed. The launch event for “Defending Canada: Voices Against Trump’s 51st State” is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Groove Cat Books and Music in New Westminster.
