The Ontario court system is making a significant leap into the digital age, with the launch of the Ontario Courts Public Portal set for next week. This new online portal will revolutionize how individuals in Toronto engage with the court system, offering convenient access to file documents, pay fees, and attend court hearings virtually.
Initially focused on Toronto matters and excluding criminal cases, the portal will expand digital access for various types of cases, including family, civil, small claims, bankruptcy, Divisional Court, and enforcement cases, as well as provincial court family cases.
Attorney General Doug Downey highlighted the portal’s role in creating a more transparent and accessible system, allowing the public to easily track their court cases, manage filings, make payments, and retrieve important documents. While emphasizing a “digital first” approach, Downey reassured that traditional paper options will still be available.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the move towards digital court services, but Downey had already prioritized modernizing the system well before. The Ontario Courts Public Portal is a result of collaborative efforts between the government and Superior Court Chief Justice Geoffrey Morawetz, aimed at streamlining court processes and enhancing user experience.
This new digital platform, developed in partnership with Thomson Reuters, marks a historic transformation in the Ontario court system, providing an integrated and user-friendly interface for all stakeholders. With future plans to include criminal matters and expand provincewide access, this initiative is expected to offer a more efficient and accessible legal environment.
