Vehicle crashes into downtown Nanaimo restaurant

On Monday, around 7:45 p.m., Mounties responded to a report of a motor vehicle that had driven into the front of a restaurant in downtown Nanaimo.

Along with police, firefighters and BC Emergency Health Services responded to the call.

A black SUV was found lodged in the front of a sushi restaurant, leaving extensive damage to the front of the building and the interior.

Several minor injuries to people at the restaurant were reported while others were just shaken by the incident.

Police were able to identify the alleged driver of the SUV.

Based on their observations, a man in his 40s was detained for suspected impaired driving by drugs.

He was later transported for medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and no charges have been laid.
