Impaired driver flees on foot after head-on collision in Lake Country

On Tuesday, around 7:15 p.m., Mounties in Lake Country responded to a call for a two-car crash on Okanagan Centre Road West near Carrs Landing Road.

When police arrived on scene, they were able to determine that one car had failed to navigate a sharp curve on Okanagan Centre Road West, crossing into the oncoming lane, and collided head-on with an SUV.

Both the car and SUV sustained significant damage and were left undrivable.

The driver of the car that crossed the centre line was seen leaving the scene on foot with injuries consistent with an airbag deploying.

RCMP located the driver a short distance away. They did not appear to be seriously injured but did show signs of recent alcohol use.

The driver provided breath samples while still at the roadside which confirmed they were impaired due to alcohol.

The driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

The driver of the SUV was not injured. “This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have resulted in far more serious consequences,” says Cpl. Ryder Birtwistle of the Lake Country RCMP. “We continue to target impaired and dangerous driving, but it is concerning to see incidents like this putting the public at risk.”
