Shale gas is making waves in Quebec politics as Coalition Avenir Québec leader Christine Fréchette highlighted a growing acceptance of fracking among Quebecers amidst trade tensions with the United States. The topic of fracking has gained prominence in the Quebec election campaign, with the Quebec Conservatives advocating for fossil fuel use to bolster the economy.
Fréchette’s comments came in response to a report by La Presse, which revealed a divided sentiment among Quebecers on the issue of fracking. The newspaper’s survey indicated that support for fracking saw an uptick when viewed as a means to reduce dependence on American markets.
Notably, the CAQ, led by former premier François Legault, prohibited shale gas exploration and production in 2022. However, during the recent party leadership competition, Fréchette expressed willingness to reconsider shale gas development in Quebec.
Speaking at a press conference in Trois-Rivières, Que., Fréchette noted a changing perspective among Quebecers, signaling a greater openness to exploring such possibilities. While she emphasized the importance of social acceptance, she acknowledged that further deliberation would be necessary before any concrete decisions are made.
