Toronto bestowed one of its highest honors upon Kyle Lowry by awarding him a key to the city.
The beloved Raptors icon was presented with the prestigious accolade during a lively block party at Jurassic Park, the iconic gathering spot outside the Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto. Mayor Olivia Chow personally handed Lowry the key in a ceremony that celebrated his exceptional contributions to the city, both on the basketball court and within the community.
Describing Lowry as more than just a basketball star, Mayor Chow praised his leadership, determination, and philanthropic endeavors, emphasizing his profound impact on Toronto. “Kyle Lowry gave Toronto his heart alongside unforgettable moments on the court,” Mayor Chow expressed. “His legacy embodies the true spirit of our city.”
Acknowledging Lowry as a true Toronto hero, Mayor Chow declared him “a champion, a proud Torontonian, and the Greatest Raptor of All Time,” underscoring the significance of awarding him the Key to the City.
During his nine seasons with the Raptors since 2012, Lowry played an instrumental role in securing the team’s historic NBA championship in 2019. A six-time NBA All-Star, Lowry holds multiple franchise records, including assists, steals, and three-point field goals.
Beyond his on-court achievements, Lowry has made a lasting impact off the court through his charitable work with the Lowry Love Foundation, further solidifying his legacy in the city.
In a poignant moment earlier this year, Lowry officially retired as a Toronto Raptor by signing a symbolic one-day contract. The Raptors plan to retire his jersey number, No. 7, in a special ceremony at the Scotiabank Arena on January 10, 2027.
