A man in his 20s from Lachine received a $1,468 ticket and 14 demerit points after he was caught traveling at 142 km/h on Highway 20 with eight passengers on board and having headlights off at night.
The incident happened May 29, when officers from the Montreal highway control station stopped the vehicle travelling more than 70 km/h over the speed limit on the Highway 20 in the Angrignon area.
“During the stop, the patrol officers noted that there were eight passengers in the vehicle, even though it is designed to carry only five,” the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said in a press release. “Several passengers were not wearing their seat belts.”
His driver’s license was suspended for seven days and got 14 demerit points. The vehicle was impounded. Many passengers were also given tickets for not wearing their seat belts.
While there were no injuries, the SQ took the opportunity to warn drivers that speed is one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on Quebec roads.
