“Delta Pioneers: First Official Ash-Scattering Site on Fraser River Opens, Offering a Unique Memorial Haven”

The province of British Columbia has unveiled plans for a unique ash-scattering site on Tilbury Island along the picturesque Fraser River in Delta.

City of Delta has pledged up to $225,000 towards enhancing the site, which will serve as a public park where families can gather to scatter cremated remains in the tranquil waters of the Fraser River.

Responding to a community need for a designated location to carry out cultural and faith-based funeral practices in a public setting, the project aims to provide a space for families to honor their loved ones.

Delta Mayor George Harvie expressed pride in the initiative, highlighting the importance of creating a space for reflection and gathering along the waterfront that respects the diverse cultural and faith traditions of the residents.

Tilbury Island, which already features a reflective garden and seating area, will undergo improvements to become a dignified park suitable for respectful ceremonies, thanks to the investment from the City of Delta.

BC’s Attorney General, Niki Sharma, emphasized the significance of the ash-scattering site for communities south of the Fraser River, particularly the South Asian community, who previously had to travel abroad for funeral rites. The new space will offer a culturally respectful place for families to gather, reflect, and honor their loved ones close to home.
