The summer construction holidays in Quebec have just begun, but unfortunately, they are already proving to be dangerous on the roads.
Tragedy struck on Saturday night in Sacré-Cœur on the North Shore when a collision involving four vehicles resulted in the loss of two lives and left seven others injured. The incident occurred on Route 138 around 6 p.m., near kilometer 584.
Sergeant Elizabeth Marquis-Guy, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), revealed that the driver of a vehicle traveling westbound lost control, crossed lanes, and collided with three oncoming vehicles heading east. The victims were two men in their twenties from the initial vehicle that veered off the road, with a third occupant in critical condition.
While the occupants of the other vehicles suffered injuries, their lives are not considered to be in danger, as confirmed by Sergeant Marquis-Guy. The SQ has dispatched a collision investigation expert to analyze the scene and determine the causes of the tragic event.
The construction holidays, which run until August 1st, have historically been a period of increased road incidents. Last year, the SQ reported 38 deaths in 30 collisions during this period, marking the worst road safety record in the past decade.
Emphasizing the importance of road safety, the SQ urged everyone to be vigilant and comply with traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on the roads. Just last Friday, a head-on collision in Lantier claimed the lives of three individuals, including a child, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by motorists during this holiday period.
