“Critical Appeal: Canadian Blood Services Urges Immediate Action to Boost Life-Saving Cord Blood Donations”

When Chelsey Hugelshofer welcomed her first daughter into the world, it was a profound moment for her. Beyond the joy of birth, she made a selfless decision to donate her cord blood.

“For me, the opportunity to potentially save a life was an easy choice,” shared Hugelshofer, reflecting on her decision.

Cord blood, a rich source of stem cells found in the placenta and umbilical cord, holds the power to aid in crucial transfusions for individuals battling severe blood and immune system ailments, especially when conventional treatments like chemotherapy fall short.

“It felt like a simple, instinctive decision to donate something that is usually discarded as medical waste but has the potential to be a lifesaver,” she noted.

In Canada, only four maternity wards, including BC Women’s Hospital, are equipped to accept cord blood donations. These donations undergo testing, are frozen, and stored until they are required by patients, such as those fighting leukemia.

Heading the stem cell team at Canadian Blood Services, Dr. Matthew Seftel highlighted the importance of cord blood donations, emphasizing their significant impact, particularly on children. While around 5,000 units have been banked, international collaborations could provide access to tens of thousands more, yet the demand still exceeds the supply.

“The cells from these donations can be matched with recipients, finding their way to the bone marrow to establish a new blood system,” explained Seftel.

The need for stem cell matches, heavily influenced by genetic factors, poses challenges for patients from diverse backgrounds, as finding suitable donors becomes more complex. This disparity can result in extended waits for crucial transplants, a concern that resonates with Hugelshofer, who has a mixed Asian and European heritage.

“With my daughter being even more mixed race, the odds of finding a match for her are slim. By participating in cord blood donation, I hope to make a difference for someone with a similar ethnic background,” expressed Hugelshofer.
