Ford questioned why the United States, with its abundant resources, has not offered aid such as water bombers to help combat the fires. He emphasized the importance of supporting neighboring countries in times of need and called out Trump for his stance on the issue.
In response, Trump blamed Canada for the spread of smoky air into the United States and threatened punitive measures, including additional tariffs. Ford countered by highlighting Canada’s history of aiding the U.S. during natural disasters and stressed the importance of mutual assistance between nations.
Ford also suggested that removing tariffs on Canadian lumber could facilitate cooperation in addressing the wildfires. Despite Trump’s statements about potential assistance, Ford noted that no concrete offers had been made.
During a CNN interview, Ford expressed disappointment in the lack of assistance from the U.S. government and reiterated Canada’s readiness to accept any support offered. He emphasized the importance of setting aside political differences and prioritizing humanitarian aid in times of crisis.
