According to the latest report from Statistics Canada, the overall crime rate and severity of crimes in Canada witnessed a decline in the year 2025.
Statistics Canada reveals a notable five percent decrease in Canada’s crime severity index, marking the second consecutive year of decline following an upward trend over the past eight years. Additionally, the conventional crime rate, which considers the total number of crimes irrespective of severity, also saw a modest two percent decrease in 2025.
The decrease in the crime severity index was primarily attributed to a consistent drop in break-and-enter cases for the third year in a row. Furthermore, the report highlights reductions in national homicide rates, motor vehicle thefts, and instances of extortion, although incidents of shoplifting showed an increase.
While fraud cases saw a decline in 2025, the rate of reported fraud remains significantly higher, standing at 61 percent above the levels recorded in 2015. This surge reflects a growing number of reported fraud cases over the past decade.
