According to Statistics Canada, there have been positive developments in crime trends in the country as both the overall crime rate and the severity of crimes have decreased in 2025.
The latest report from the agency reveals a significant five percent drop in Canada’s crime severity index last year, marking the second consecutive year of decline after experiencing an upward trend for the past eight years. Additionally, the conventional crime rate, which measures the total number of crimes regardless of severity, also saw a decrease of two percent in 2025.
StatCan attributes the decrease in the crime severity index to the consistent drop in break-and-enter cases for the third consecutive year. Furthermore, the report highlights reductions in national homicide rates, motor vehicle thefts, and incidents of extortion, although there was an increase in shoplifting incidents.
While fraud cases decreased in 2025, the rate of fraud remains substantially higher at 61 percent compared to 2015, indicating a notable increase in reported cases over the past decade.
