Commuters in the Montreal area can now ditch their physical OPUS cards and use their Android smartphones as virtual tickets for public transit.
Starting this week, Android users have the convenience of purchasing fares directly through the Chrono app and using their smartphones to access buses, métro trains, and the Exo commuter rail. This new feature is being introduced gradually to all Android users, with plans to extend support to Apple devices in the near future.
The Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) shared with CityNews that this advancement allows customers with Android devices to easily navigate the public transit network using their phones. The rollout of a new version of the Chrono app for Android users enables the direct purchase and validation of tickets on mobile devices. Simultaneously, the ARTM is collaborating with Apple teams to bring this capability to iPhone users as well.
To avail of this feature, users need to access the “Purchase fares” section and choose “Virtual fares” in the Chrono app before logging in or creating an account. While Exo train passengers can now use virtual OPUS cards, they are still required to validate them at station validators before boarding.
This development comes after a significant delay, as the ARTM had initially aimed to launch smartphone fare purchases more than two years ago. The agency’s plans for testing the technology in 2021 were later pushed to an early 2024 launch before encountering further delays.
Furthermore, the ARTM is currently experimenting with contactless debit and credit card payments on select Exo buses as part of a separate pilot initiative. However, there is no set timeline for when this payment option will be expanded region-wide.
