A beloved resident grizzly bear at Grouse Mountain, Grinder, has peacefully passed away after experiencing a decline in mobility. Grinder, who had been a familiar face for guests for 25 years, was given a humane passing in the habitat he called home, according to Grouse Mountain Resort. Veterinarian Dr. Ken Macquisten, who cared for Grinder since he was a cub, expressed heartfelt sadness at the loss.
“It is a decision that was made with the utmost care and consideration for the grizzly bear millions have come to know and love,” said Macquisten. Despite the sorrow, the team finds solace in Grinder’s lasting impact as an ambassador for wildlife conservation.
Grinder, found orphaned as a cub in 2001 and living at Grouse Mountain since, alongside long-time companion Coola, became iconic figures at the attraction. Coola, who remains healthy, is being closely monitored and cared for by the wildlife team following Grinder’s passing.
