Quebec Sees Surge in Cyclosporiasis Cases Amid Summer Months
Quebec has experienced a significant spike in cyclosporiasis cases this summer, with a total of 223 infections reported as of August 1st. This number surpasses the average recorded over the past four years, marking a concerning trend in the region.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora, known to trigger severe watery diarrhea that can persist for weeks. The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS) has highlighted the rise in cases, with 223 instances reported in 2026, a stark contrast to the 79 cases during the same period in the previous year. The annual average between 2022 and 2025 stood at 70 cases, underscoring the current surge.
Health officials have indicated that a significant portion of the cyclosporiasis cases in Quebec are linked to travel, particularly to Mexico. Notably, these cases are distinct from the widespread U.S. outbreak associated with contaminated lettuce.
According to the ministry, there is no apparent connection between the Quebec cases and the lettuce-related outbreak in several U.S. states, including Michigan. Fortunately, the number of hospitalizations remains low, with fewer than five individuals requiring hospital care, and no intensive care or fatalities reported in the province.
To mitigate the risk of cyclosporiasis, health officials recommend thorough washing of fruits and vegetables, using safe drinking water, and exercising caution when traveling to tropical or subtropical regions where the parasite is prevalent.
