The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have announced a major breakthrough in combating vehicle theft, recovering a staggering 392 stolen vehicles valued at a whopping $28 million. This achievement comes as a result of their successful anti-fraud initiative, Project NoCargo, that was launched in June 2025.
Project NoCargo is specifically designed to crack down on international crime networks that exploit stolen or fake personal information to secure vehicle loans and insurance policies. These illicit operations have been linked to causing approximately $900 million in insurance losses in the past year alone.
One of the primary goals of Project NoCargo is to prevent the illegal exportation of these stolen vehicles from Canadian ports. Significant seizures were carried out in key ports such as Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver to disrupt these criminal activities.
Collaborating with partners such as INTERPOL Ottawa, the Canada Border Services Agency, FINTRAC, and Canadian financial institutions, the RCMP is leading the charge against organized vehicle theft rings.
In a related development, the Canada Border Services Agency reported that they intercepted a notable 1,590 stolen vehicles at rail yards and ports in 2025, further underscoring the prevalence and severity of this criminal enterprise.
