“Quebec Psychiatrists Urge Creation of Dedicated Mental Health Minister to Tackle Crisis”

The mental health crisis in Quebec has prompted the Quebec Association of Psychiatrists (AMPQ) to take action. Recently, the AMPQ introduced its Mental Health 2026 initiative, which includes a proposal for six key measures. The first measure calls for the appointment of a dedicated minister for mental health.

With elections on the horizon, the AMPQ is urging political parties to prioritize mental health and make tangible commitments in this area. During a press conference at the Old Brewery Mission in Montreal, Dr. Claire Gamache, the AMPQ president, emphasized the crucial role of a Minister of Mental Health. This minister would be responsible for coordinating government efforts, monitoring key mental health indicators, and implementing strategies that address a wide range of issues impacting various sectors, including youth, homelessness, and addiction.

Dr. Gamache stressed the importance of giving the Minister of Mental Health significant influence in decision-making processes, working closely with the Minister of Health, and collaborating with other key stakeholders to address mental health challenges effectively.

Despite past efforts, challenges in mental health are escalating. Dr. Gamache highlighted concerning statistics, such as a significant increase in hospitalizations for suicide attempts among young girls. The number of homeless individuals in Quebec is also on the rise, with a notable surge in visible homelessness across the province.

The deteriorating mental health landscape is a cause for alarm, with escalating distress, growing complexity of needs, and barriers to accessing timely care. Dr. Gamache emphasized the need for concrete solutions based on clinical expertise, data analysis, and best practices, rather than mere wishful thinking.

The Mental Health 2026 platform includes measures to prevent homelessness, provide alternatives to hospitalization, enhance suicide prevention efforts, support caregivers, and improve access to care through telemedicine.
