Cobourg Police Warn Against Home Improvement Scam Targeting Seniors
Residents of Cobourg are being cautioned by the local police following a troubling incident where a senior citizen fell victim to a suspected scam related to home improvements.
According to authorities, the elderly homeowner received an unsolicited call from an individual claiming to be associated with an HVAC maintenance company. Subsequently, a group of four individuals arrived at the residence, masquerading as legitimate workers and proposed the installation of a heat pump.
Trusting the supposed workers, the victim agreed to proceed and issued a $5,000 deposit check for the service. After the installation, the homeowner was bombarded with requests for additional payments from one of the individuals involved.
Upon further investigation, it was discovered that an unauthorized withdrawal of $95,000 had been made from the victim’s bank account, leading to significant financial loss.
While the case is still under investigation with no arrests made as of yet, Cobourg police emphasize the importance of vigilance and offer the following advice to safeguard against similar scams:
