A zoo visitor at Granby Zoo required first aid following an incident involving a Japanese macaque in a secure area usually off-limits to the public. The zoo has not disclosed the exact nature of the interaction.
The visitor has received medical attention and is reported to be in good condition, as per a statement released by the zoo. In response to the incident, the zoo conducted an internal investigation and has reinforced operational protocols with its staff.
Dr. Mélissa Généreux, a medical advisor, indicated that Japanese macaques may carry the Herpes B virus. Although the risk of human transmission is low, potential contact could result in severe complications if not promptly addressed.
Granby Zoo urges individuals who had direct physical contact with the macaque, such as a scratch, bite, or exposure of a wound to the animal’s saliva, to seek medical advice by contacting Info-Santé at 811, stated Généreux in the zoo’s press release.
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take necessary actions if required. Measures have already been put in place to assist anyone who may have come into contact with the macaque.
