The Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) is gearing up for the upcoming provincial elections this fall with the announcement of a new candidate set to join the race on Thursday.
James Hughes, the President and CEO of the Old Brewery Mission, will be vying for the Vaudreuil seat in the October elections, according to a source confirmed by CityNews.
The PLQ is scheduled to officially confirm Hughes’ candidacy at a press conference in the Vaudreuil riding later on Thursday.
This development follows the decision of Marie-Claude Nichols, the current Vaudreuil MNA, to step down from re-election due to family reasons earlier this week.
In another recent move, the PLQ revealed that Michel Leblanc, the former President and CEO of the Montreal Chamber of Commerce (CCMM), will be their candidate for the Marguerite-Bourgeoys riding in southwest Montreal. PLQ President Charles Milliard emphasized Leblanc’s background in economics as a significant addition to the party’s roster.
Hughes’ entry into the political arena brings valuable expertise in addressing the issue of homelessness, a concern that has seen a significant rise of over 20% in Quebec since 2022, extending beyond the boundaries of Montreal.
As the party continues to solidify its candidate lineup, having already unveiled selections for more than three-quarters of the 125 ridings, the stage is being set for an eventful campaign season leading up to the elections on Oct. 5.
