Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw will be providing a crucial update on the recent firearm incident outside the United States Consulate during a press briefing at 11 a.m.
Last week, on July 27, reports of shots fired outside the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue prompted a swift response from Toronto police. While no injuries were reported, evidence of a firearm discharge was discovered at the scene. Fortunately, there were two security personnel inside the consulate at the time of the incident.
Following the gunfire, a white Honda Accord without license plates was spotted fleeing the area. Police initiated a pursuit, but it was terminated due to the high speed of the suspect’s vehicle, reaching over 140 km/hr, and the associated risks, near the DVP and Don Mills.
In a related development, Chief Demkiw will be joined by Chief Superintendent Joe Matthews of Detective Operations for the press briefing at Toronto Police Headquarters on Thursday.
This recent firearm discharge incident comes on the heels of another shooting on March 10, where two individuals fired multiple rounds at the consulate’s entrance before escaping in a stolen Honda CR‑V. The March incident led to a comprehensive national‑security investigation involving various law enforcement agencies.
While one suspect was apprehended, another evaded capture until additional arrests were made in June. Subsequently, a 19‑year‑old was charged in connection with the March shooting after being located at Toronto Pearson Airport. The investigation into these incidents has since broadened to involve multiple suspects and suspected connections to coordinated shootings across the Greater Toronto Area.
